Would you stop a thief?

Star's picture

It's an exciting time of the year in China, right? Spring Festival is just around the corner and most of you will be rendezvousing with your families, enjoying delicious food, maybe receiving a red envelope or two, and resting up before the start of another busy school or work year.

But it's also an exciting time of the year for thieves all over China. They are watching you and waiting to grab something from you. They want your purse, your cell phone, your wallet -- whatever you can give them.

Hopefully, all of you are very careful with your belongings. You aren't going to lose anything this holiday. But what if you see a thief about to rob someone else? What if you see a thief putting a hand in someone's pocket or slipping a hand in someone's purse?

Will you warn the potential victim? Will you be a good citizen and try to prevent a crime? Or will you just sit there and watch it happen?

I look forward to reading your comments.

I think, if my things being stolen it, I go back to stop, but the words of others, I may have to see what the situation is, if you see a little stole my things, but they do not stop, then why do I to stop small secretly others? Besides, my ability is limited, I can't stop any thief, so I must look at the situation!

My topic is an old topic, that is should cell phone should appear in the class, and the teacher how to deal with it,although it is old,but it is critical for us in our study life,it will exist in our class, except for our spoken English class.
when some students feel the teacher's speech is boring, they will play their cell phones, some expensive phone, and they play them for the whole class.
At the first, when you play you cell phone, you can't pay attention to what the teacher said, and you can't obtain the knowledge, and when you have to sent message to your parents, friends, that you meet something makes you worry about, you can do that, but you have to keep silence,if you have sound, the teacher will be angry with you,and the classmates will be also angry, because you bother them.
And if I was a teacher, when I students make voice when I am having a speech in my class,I will take his cell phone away,I think that a behavior make me not happy,I also think the student don't respect to my speech.
thank you! this is my opinion about my topic.

when we heard about the topic ,the first idea emerges into our mind maybe is that we should stand out and give some sign or hint to the someone who was being stolen ,however ,we would better balance whether it will be the loss outweights the gain, if you ever listen to the news ,a thief was be exposed to the one who was his neighborhood he was stealing ,i was astonished by it ,when someone seeking the dignity for living in danger ,he will do some reasonlessly ,so theinappropriate motion will cause bad results ,put somone into prison,so when meet the same occurrent things ,be carefull ,take appropriate measure to mention , take notice

It is a common phenomenon in China as you say.AS for me, I think I can't just sit,I will do something to warm them.I think what the most important is that we should get good preparetion to stop this happens,we should improve warms in publics.

Yesterday when I was waiting the bus at the bus stop, somebody put his hand into my pocket and nearly took my cell phone. This was my first time, being so close to a thief. I know there are a lot of thieves that i always be very very very careful. but you can't be wary EVERY moment-once you pay less attention, you give them time. I was so shocked and sacred. what made me angry and sad was that there was a man, who also waiting the bus, did see the whole process.he did nothing but smiling, as if he was watching an interesting play. and the thief still did it naturally even knew someone was looking at him. I am so so so so angry. how could the man smile at both me and the thief?! how could the thief put the hand just like doing anything else, in a day time, under so many eyes?! without feeling sacred at all?!but I, the victim, feel sacred. what's wrong with the society?!!

There is nothing you can do to stop a thief stealing things from you , what you can do is take less money while hanging out .

Candice郑's picture

Maybe I will. But it is so common in china to be a on-looker.People who saw a thief stealing something they just pretend nothing have happened.Anyway, everyone have their choices to do or not to do.

lishuping's picture

yes,I will .I hate the thief.

louis_zero's picture

basically ,i won't just stand back and do nothing. however,i couldn't stop the thief directary .but i will try other ways to stop it .for example if we are on a bus, i will try to speak loudly or just sing a song to warm the victim .

in a word ,i won't just turn a blind eye on this matter.

hope everyone have the passion to stop this sin.

I will, beacuese I have learned Chinese kickboxing this semester. It not only can help people stop a thief but also is a good chance to check my ability.:))

I have been robbed a purse during last Spring Festival.I was so pity that I wasn't keep my purse well .If I see someone robbing ,maybe I would not stop it directly ,I would do simething make the suffer themselves to notice it .Because the robber often have knife in hand,we should protect ourselves safe .

Mandymandy's picture

Actually,I don't think I will prevent the thief from robbing.Because I am not strong enough to against the thief, but i will try to make the victim to notice there is something wrong with him or her.And if possible,I will take a photo as a evident.
Well,what would you do,sir?

As a foreigner in China I once saw a thief reaching into a backpack of a Chinese girl walking in the mall. I shouted, "STOP", because I did not speak the Chinese language. The thief was startled and ran off, the girl looked confused and kept walking. Others around the area stared at me as if I was the one doing wrong. Thinking about this later, I realized that I may have put myself in danger by trying to help. I felt good about helping that time, but I am sorry to say, I doubt that I would do it again in the future if the same thing happened.

Oh, I have warned a man who was sitting next to me on a bus. I sat by the window and the man sat by the gangway. The thief stood very closely to the man. I guessed that the man was too worried to notice others. The thief was trying to touch the man's pocket many times. One time I noticed, I elbowed the man and the man was aware of what has happened and then closed his clothes. I was so nervous but the thief was more nervous. When the bus stopped, he got off the bus.Ha, I succeeded.

maybe i can contact the polic immediately but i could't stop by myself..is't very dangerous

dandongalisa's picture

To be honesty, if i happened to see a thief, i won't see through, cause the thieves are so crucial, the most important things is that i am alone in working and living, so i must protect myself, i have no ability to stop them, this is really sad for all Chinese people.

When i saw the topic here, the first thought that came up in my mind is the answer No!But it does not mean that i am not a good citizen.I think,i will not and cannot stop the thieves most of the time.
At present, thieves are not so simply thieves actually, kind of robbers sometimes. They bring arms like knives or other things in case they got trouble while they are stealling. This is pretty scary! You cannot so obviously stop a thief coz you may hurt people around by doing that!
As for me,maybe i would walk up to the person who is stolen and pretend to hit him or her unheedingly to make him or her alert.

I'd been robbed a wallet during the spring festival. Also, i saw someone being robbed, but i couldn't take any steps to prevent it.Because i was stared at by the thief,i wanted to ask someone to help, but nobody would like to lend hands to me.So i just sat there.when i recalled these,i feld i was very coward.i want to help them, but i am not brave enough.

gail's picture

Theoretically, I might yell at the theives and warn the one who is being robbed to take care of his belongings. But it depends. If there are many people around, I will definitely shout at the theives. I claim the first reaction of the theives is to run away and maybe the passers-by would lend a hand to catch them. And also, now everyone has a cellphone and it is easy for us to take photos as evidence. In fact, I'm not afraid of the theives getting mad and trying to hurt me because the fact is that they are theives, they are committing bad deeds, and I dont think they have the gut to do this kind of things to me after being noticed.

Mr. Nathan, you really know a lot about China. Yes, time around Spring Festival is a perfect time for those thieves, since everybody go out shopping with much money and everywhere seems crowded. Just now, before I went to the ATM to get some cash, my mom kept warning me to be watchful.
I never see a pickpocket stealing before.
But I guess I will do something if I am put in this situation. But I must confess I am not a brave one. I may observe the thief for a while to see if he has a knife with him, or is there many people around me; they may be potential helper if something unwanted happened, then take action..haha.. I see the best way to prevent the crime is to remind the potential victim of his being stolen in a quiet way instead of shouting out. One may pretend to be his friend and get close to him, tell him be watchful.

Star's picture

Unfortunately I DO know about this because I've been robbed TWICE during this time. Once, I lost 3000 RMB. Another time, I lost a cellphone.

These days, I am VERY careful!

ROGER's picture

It is a universal situation. If I have enough ability,I will stop it.

Janny 0323's picture

I think I would not stop a thief. They are so violent and dangerous.

Ella4's picture

Actually,i may take a photo that the thief is stealing and call the police.I don't think i can beat the thief and also don't believe the passer-by will help me.And the thieves take a knife or somethings to protect themselves.Well,it's dangerous i think.

Star's picture

HA. Take a photo? That sounds like what I would do. But what if the thief gets mad and tries to hurt you after you take the photo?

Jane0914's picture

run as far as possible; cry out for help as loud as possible.

Ella4's picture

Usually,if a thief sees that someone notice his action,he may run or "go" away at the first time.If he prepares to hurt you,you can scream, cry out and say the police is coming. The passers-by might not help you,but they will pay attention to what happen. The thief will be afraid and run. I saw a news said that a police station had published the thieves' photos and called on the citizens to offer clues. And i think it can be a good way.

Jane0914's picture

there are thieves that do NOT be afraid of being exposed under the sunshine!!

Teacher Tom's picture

...if we all yell "STOP THIEF", what will the thief do? Stab all of us...or run away? Stopping this kind of thing is the responsibility of society - and that means it is a responsibility of each and every one of us!

If I take a picture with my phone, the thief might attack me but if 30 people take a picture? Society is only save when good people oppose bad people - there are more good people than bad people in this world!!!
