Exploring your world

Star on the Mekong River (Laos) a few years ago

A student once told me that she thought that traveling was only for foreigners. "Look at you," she said. "You've been all over the world. You must have lots of money".

I laughed. Not at her but at the idea that I was rich. I have never been rich - not by a long shot! And no one has ever paid for me to go traveling. I have always earned my own exploring money.

Cracking down on plagiarism

Starting today, the National English Club of China will no longer be tolerating posts that have been copied from other sources. Too many students are attempting to rack up points by lifting material from other websites. This is simply unacceptable and it hurts the reputation of this site. From now on, every time you create a blog or a forum topic, you will have to check a box in which you verify that you are using your OWN words in this post. If you are not using your own words, you will not be able to make the post.

An open letter to the leaders of my University

To the President and Vice President of Zhuhai College of Jilin University,

Today, at approximately 4:45PM, I was shocked to witness a yellow car speeding past the library at around 100 KM/hour. Not only did I stop to gape at this site, but so did a number of other students who happen to be on or near the campus road. It is apparent to me that this driver had no regard for the safety of anyone on that road and I believe that a terrible accident could easily have occurred. This driver was heading for the area of my neighborhood where there are lots of children out playing.

I am disgusted by this dangerous behavior but I am equally disgusted by the school's inability (or unwillingness) to do anything about it.

The meaning of EASTER

On Sunday, the Christian world will be celebrating Easter. While Easter is not a holiday on the Mainland, it is a holiday in Macau, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. The following is a reprint of what I wrote about Easter last year.

These days, I see more and more Chinese people wearing necklaces with crosses on the end. It seems to be a fashion trend in China and I'm not even sure sometimes if people know about the significance of what they are wearing.

This Sunday is a very important day for Christians around the world. It is a day when we celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. He died a painful death on a cross (crucifixion) over 2000 years ago at the hands of His own people.

Library coffee shop opens tomorrow!

I'm a lucky guy! I'm sitting here tonight at the Jilin University of Zhuhai library coffee shop sampling some delicious drinks.  They open for the first time tomorrow and I just happened to be at the right place at the right time. Read on for another picture.

What's the difference between SHY and QUIET?

I used to think that shyness and quietness were virtually the same thing. I thought that some people were loud (like me) and that others were quiet because they had 'shy' personalities. But after teaching in China for a few years, I've come to realize that there is in fact quite a difference between being shy and being quiet. All shy people are probably quiet but not all quiet people are shy!

I believe that quiet people can learn English very well while shy people will almost always struggle.

Going away for a while

It's just about time for Spring Festival. And it's time for me to go away for a while. Not far away. Just somewhere North. Don't worry! I'll be back. We'll all be back, right? So for the next couple of weeks, you won't see me posting out here very much. It's time for a rest.

This doesn't mean that you can't post. You're welcome to. But you won't hear from me as much.

WHY?

Click on the picture for a BIGGER image

In the spirit of Christmas, I'm trying to give the two people who parked their scooters here the benefit of the doubt. But come on! The rest of us parked our scooters at the end of the line, like normal people! Do these scooters belong to two VIPS? Do these people think that they're better than everyone else? And what about the people who have scooters TRAPPED behind the scooter in the background?

Mad World

I know it doesn't sound nice but I have to say it. People were acting like ANIMALS on Sunday at the Macau/Gongbei border. People were cutting in line which caused yelling and fights to break out. In this picture, a guard is kicking people out of the elderly line. What's the base problem? People here don't care about others. They look out for themselves. Period.
