Alot vs. A lot - which one is correct?

This is probably one of the most common errors in the English language. In fact, if you take a look at some of MY posts on this website, you may find that I have not always used the proper word.
Unfortunately, I am not alone. Millions of Americans don't know which word to use either and if they stop to think about the difference between these words, they quickly get a headache.
So...how should we use these words when we are writing? The answer is actually easier than you may think.
First, you should know that the word alot is NOT a word in the English language. Don't use that word! Ever! It is simply incorrect.
That leaves us then with the word a lot. A lot, if you didn't already notice, is actually two words.
We use the word a lot when we want to express a large quantity or amount of something. Usually, we use it in a positive sentence.
For example.
My dad gave me a lot of money before I left for college.
He has suffered a lot of pain throughout his trying ordeal.
In a negative sentence or a question, we would usually replace the word a lot with something else.
For example.
Do you have much time left before you have to return home? (question)
I don't have many friends in this town but I hope to get out more soon. (negative sentence)
Don't worry...no one is going to condemn you if you misuse these words now and then. Afterall, we are still trying to figure it out in America. But it's good to know, right?
By the way, I also see the word allot misused occassionally as well. Allot is actually a verb that has nothing do to with a lot. The word allot means to assign or give out.
For example.
He was allotted three hours for the task but he couldn't finish in time.
Hope that helps!

Perhaps this common spelling error began because there does exist in English a word spelled “allot” which is a verb meaning to apportion or grant. The correct form, with “a” and “lot” separated by a space is perhaps not often encountered in print because formal writers usually use other expressions such as “a great deal,” “often,” etc.

I didn't know that people seldom use "a lot" in a question or negative sentence before.

Actually, it's a common error that Americans often make. You see 'alot' all the time all over the internet.
